My how the time has flown! The summer has come to a close and the new school year has begun. Our students are already deep into their studio and art history courses; creating, experimenting, and exploring. As the first blog post of the new academic year, we wanted to catch you up on what happened over the summer as well as providing a preview of the many exciting things to come!
A Brief Recap:
- At the end of the spring, the art department graduated 22 seniors in the class of 2013. We are so proud of the work that they put in and wish them the best as they move on from Wheaton. Each students tenure in the department culminated in a solo spring senior exhibition as well as participation in a commencement show.
- Over the summer, the department hosted the “Christian In the Visual Arts” biennial conference. Titled, “JUSTart: A conversation about making things and making things right” was a 4 day conference discussing the crossing of justice and art. A fantastic four days, the conference was visited by over 200 artists, historians, and theologians presented with work shops, speakers, panels, and 5 supporting gallery shows.
Yet to Come
- 12x12x12 is our next gallery show. The criteria is simple, students will make a work that fits inside of a 12×12 inch frame, or a 12x12x12 “cube”, or is square formatted video no longer than 12 seconds in length. As an added element, students will be constructing and framing their own work. We are excited to see the work that our students create.
- Our calendar for the year is already filling. The gallery schedule includes three professional artists, two student juried shows, a collaborative feast project with multiple classes, three rounds of senior exhibitions, and the commencement show. With constant activity in the building, we will continue update the blog with all of the events in the art department.
